2010 Internet Business: Some Hope During Uncertain Times

In 2010 , many of my friends and neighbors are talking about the same thing: How to make extra money. People have different reasons for wanting to earn more income. Some say they want to retire in the next 15 years, but they are concerned that these bad economic times may get worse and their retirement savings and social security benefits will not match ongoing expenses. Other people I talk to are already on the rocks. Their investments are not making the gains they hoped or they have lost a lot of money in their accounts and find themselves wondering if they will ever recoup their losses. Their mortgages are “underwater” – they owe more to their lenders than their homes are worth. They may even have considerable credit card debt. They are unable to save money because they are living paycheck to paycheck.

The often asked question has become “Where can I find an opportunity which I can manage without changing or giving up my day job, asking for a raise, or becoming a bank robber?”

The good news is the average computer literate person can earn a considerable income from home. These online opportunities makes sense for people who have been laid off in the recession, have become incapacitated in some way and can no longer do their old labor intensive job, or have an interest in exploring new kinds of work in their spare time. Most of these opportunities are not a get rich quick blueprint or something that creates itself and runs on “auto-pilot” at first, as some advertisers would have you think. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is! You will have to do new kinds of work, and this is not for lazy “couch potatoes” who would rather not apply themselves. You can do it with determination, persistence, a sense of humor and a plan of attack.

The benefits to establishing a home based business are numerous and far out weigh the drawbacks. For one thing, you cannot be thrown out of your own business. As long as you keep your operating expenses very low and learn to run zero or low cost marketing promotions, you will not go out of business. You will not have the overhead costs of a brick and mortar business and there is no staff to manage unless you want to grow to a size where you take on employees. Your own Internet marketing business can be a financial lifeline as you are coming upon retirement. If you have PC skills or can develop them, possess a drive to succeed, can follow basic business principles, and are willing to learn about all kinds of subjects, you have the ingredients to be successful. Millions of new websites are cropping up each year as people of all walks of life are looking toward the future with open minds about online business transactions.

You may ask yourself if YOU could manage to get a business going only working on it in your spare time a few hours a day. Other people do it, but can YOU do it? Yes! It is being done every day. There is no reason why you can’t do it, too! While you may be able to devote only a small amount of time each day on your website, your website will work 24/7 for you. Because your website keeps working even when you don’t, you can earn a decent hourly wage for the hours you devote each week. This beats folding laundry at the local laundromat any day!

You can start an Internet business part time at first and gradually expand to make a comfortable full time income online. Or, you can dive right in and go full time. One way to start online is to sell simple information products which you create yourself based on what YOU already know. If you can create, or can hire someone else to create, e-books, e-booklets, special reports, audio tapes, video’s and CDs which contain information people need to know to solve a problem or want to learn about, you have the resource to create a successful home based Internet business that can work as an insurance policy should the worst happen. Maybe social security will collapse, major auto companies will fail, banks will need bailouts, or we’ll have to live through more terrorist attacks, but your online business can be a safety net for you during bad times as long as the Internet itself remains functioning.

You may also think that you need to obtain a certain level of education or be a expert in a field to succeed in creating an online information product business. Not so, but it does help to acquaint yourself with experts to gain professional advice. You can avoid the hurdles that so many new marketers fall into by talking with people who have expert knowledge and can teach you advanced techniques and strategies that work in today’s marketplace.

Ultimately, you strive for a business that works unmanned 365 days of the year, but that truthfully is not a reality in any business whether it be online or brick and mortar style. You will have to check on your website now and then, add fresh content, and respond to customers who would like to converse with a “live” person. Customer care is still very, very important. But all of this work can be outsourced to others. You will not be tied down and limited to daily business operations unless you want to be.

So, if you are among those in 2010 considering retirement, or you are looking for an extra income, or you are still working but you want to challenge yourself by learning a new skill set in your spare time, think about learning to market products online. Whether you market products that are your own, or you market products for another company and get paid to do so, you will find that it can be a very rewarding experience. You will gain both financially and intellectually. Internet marketing is a fun, fast-paced industry for you to investigate, learn about and prosper in during these uncertain times.
